In 2013 Brazoria Heritage Foundation and Chevron-Phillips dedicated the Emancipation Tree from the Sweeny Plantation in Old Ocean Texas.
It is carved from a Bois d’ Arc tree by Hitchcock artist Earl S. Jones and titled “Life on the Plantation”
This tree has a significant historical value to Brazoria County.
The Emancipation Proclamation was read to the slaves under this tree after the Civil War ended.
This exhibit can be found in the main hallway in the museum.
